TV Resolutions Explained

Progressive (p) format: The full picture updates every 60th of a second.

Interlaced (i) format: half the picture updates every 60th of a second.

480p: the picture is 740x480 pixels, sent at 60 complete frames per second.

480i: the picture is 740x480 pixels sent at 60 interlaced frames per second, or 30 complete frames.

4:3, or Aspect Ratio, is the screen width/height ratio.

Note: Because progressive scans the complete image, the result is a smoother picture and less flicker (depending on your television). For example, Analog TV is at 480i, while and digital television begins at 480p. HDTV is 720p, 1080i, and 1080p.
